This horse is not actually an appaloosa. It does not have the spotting factor, which is a dominant gene.  Without the spotting factor, the horse will be a solid color regardless of what modifiers it may have. The recessive allele at the spotting factor locus is written Ap+ (Gower, 101). Because this allele is recessive, this horse must be Ap+Ap+.

Note: The “+” when used in genetics refers to the standard allele in a series of genes. For all the appaloosa genes here, the “+” also refers to the recessive allele.
