About

I live in Simi Valley, California with my family, plus a doAshley Shellhause is best known for creating large scale acrylic paintings that emphasize materials and process. Her painting practice is heavily influenced by the stain painter Helen Frankenthaler, action painters like Jackson Pollock, and the patterns and figures of Robert Kushner.

Her works are typically abstract, sometimes incorporating elements of geometric or organic patterns. The imagery in her work typically comes from her background in biology and her travels. Recently she has been working on a series of landscape and botanical paintings based on her experiences in the state and national parks.

“A picture lives with the life you put into it. If you put no life into it – no thrill, no concentration of delight or exaltation of visual discovery – then the picture is dead, like so many canvases, no matter how much thorough and scientific work is put into it.” – D. H. Lawrence
