Here is a horse with a combination of varnish and dark spots. I’ve drawn this horse with fairly extensive varnish. Notice the darker areas remaining on the face, legs, hip and shoulder. The extent of varnish on a horse may change over time. Many varnish horses are born solid, with just the minimal appaloosa characteristics (Gower, 105). In this horse’s case, it may look like dark spots are appearing as the varnish spreads.
