These horses all have the snowcap allele, written ScS. The first four horses only have one copy of the snowcap allele, so their genotype is ScSSc+. The fifth horse is ScSScS. One copy of the snowcap allele will create a white blanket, usually over the hips of the horse. The size may vary. Two copies of the snowcap allele results in a color called “few spot”. A horse with this genotype would be entirely white, possibly with some dark areas remaining on its legs (Gower, 103). This type of gene interaction is called incomplete or partial dominance. When there is one of each allele present, the result is a mixture of the two (Gower, 16).  

The snowcap allele is represented by contour lines from a map of the area near my parents’ house in California.
